Philomath’s Smart sets meet record, girls take team title at Mariman Invitational
Philomath High junior Cassidy Smart broke a 21-year-old meet record Saturday at the Paul Mariman Invitational and the girls turned in a dominant performance to take the team title on their home course. Smart finished the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 45.5 seconds, beating the previous record of 18:00.1 set in 2005 by Sherwood’s Ilsa Paulson. Freshman teammate Olivia Hernandez placed second in 18:00.1, the same time as the old record. Smart, who won the race last year in 18:49.9…
