The Philomath High School boys soccer team could not keep pace with the home team on a visit to Stayton Thursday night in a 7-1 conference loss.

The Warriors (3-6-1 overall, 2-3 Oregon West) will begin their second tour of the league Tuesday with a trip to Newport. The Cubs took a 4-1 win over Philomath in their first meeting back on Sept. 24.

Stayton remained within striking distance of first-place Cascade in the conference standings. The Cougars sit atop the heap at 4-0-1 with Stayton at 4-1 and Newport at 2-1-1.

The Eagles scored four goals in the first half to pull away from the Warriors early. Philomath’s lone goal was scored by sophomore Andrew Sims, who finished a cross from junior Dreyton Nuño with about five minutes left in the first half.

“Our goal came around the 35th minute with Dreyton beating his defender down the line, crossing and Andrew Sims finishing the ball at the back post,” Warriors coach Gerardo Garibay said. “Dreyton has been great for us all year. He has been able to beat his defender and create chances for us no matter who we are playing against.”
