Editor’s note: Family records, Allen’s death certificate and Mount Union Cemetery records differ from the 1905 article on a few points. Her first name appears as “Ann” on both the death certificate and the grave marker, rather than “Anne” as the newspaper spelled it. According to family records on Ancestry.com, she was born Anna Maria Woodward on Aug. 27, 1820, in Canterbury, Connecticut, to Elijah and Aurelia Woodward. Those records show she married Nathan W. Allen on Jan. 24, 1841, in Ellsworth, Ohio, three years earlier than the year mentioned in the article, and that the couple had 12 children over 22 years — the first in November 1841. Her Benton County death certificate and Mount Union Cemetery records both list her date of death as Sept. 14, 1905, rather than Wednesday, Sept. 13, as the article indicates. The certificate gives the cause of death as Bright’s disease, a kidney ailment.
