The Philomath Sensational Senior Society took a bit of time off for the summer, but we are back and ready for a full schedule. We had a wonderful decluttering session in early September, and if you were there, you know it was worth your time. If you were not, here are a couple of decluttering tips to share:

1. Take four medium-sized boxes and label them “Donate,” “Throw Away,” “Give to Someone” (a family member?) and “Keep.” Next, tackle the spot you want to declutter — say, a closet. Pull all the clothes from the closet and put each item into one of the boxes. Then you can put the kept items back in your new, roomy space.

2. Don’t try to do it all at once. Perhaps set aside 10 or 30 minutes a day and work on a drawer, a shelf or even a room, getting rid of anything you have not used in nine months or that you don’t want anymore. The job is not as overwhelming when you take these smaller bites each day, and you will feel a sense of accomplishment even in short bursts.

Next on our horizon is craft time at Maxtivity on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when we will work on cork pumpkins! Maxtivity is located at 1604 Main St. in Philomath, and we meet for one to two hours starting at 10 a.m. Please join us — drop-ins are always welcome.

Then on Tuesday, Oct. 13, we will hold a very important session on emergency preparedness presented by Bryan Lee, Benton County’s emergency manager. This meeting will be held in the City Council chambers at Philomath City Hall (the farthest west door). We have learned through natural disasters such as wildfires, storms, flooding and earthquakes that this information is very important to help you survive such an event. Please join us even if you are not a senior citizen. We want all of our neighbors to be as safe as possible.

For now, we are back to crafting at Maxtivity on the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. We also hold an educational or social event on the second Tuesday of the month, also at 10 a.m. That meeting usually alternates between City Hall and the Rebekah Lodge on North 13th Street, depending on group size and technology needs. This month, it’s at City Hall.

All are invited to our meetings. We are a friendly group, and we have lots of fun. You do not need to commit to anything; just show up when you are interested or have the time. We hope to see you in October! And keep your eyes open for a possible announcement in January … do I have your interest piqued?
