The Philomath High School girls soccer team opened up Oregon West Conference play on Thursday evening in Newport with a 5-1 victory. Junior Bethany Cannon had a hat trick for the Warriors.
Philomath evened its overall record to 3-3 with the win. The Cubs fall to 0-4-1.
“We played good team soccer, connecting a lot of passes and taking a lot of shots,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said. “All of Bethany’s and Bella’s goals were outside the box.”
Cannon scored the team’s first two goals with assists by junior Reagan Nuño and senior Angelica Morales-Marquez. The Warriors scored their third goal on an unassisted shot by junior Bella Nunez.
In the second half, Philomath added two more. Cannon’s third of the evening included an assist by freshman Sienna Smith. Sophomore Autumn Wilson also found the net with an assist by senior Ella Bumstead.
Philomath is scheduled to play Tuesday at home against Taft with a start time of 4 p.m.
