The Philomath High School girls volleyball team shot out to the early lead on Thursday night by taking the first set at Newport but the Cubs regrouped and ended up with a 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 win.
The match was the Oregon West Conference opener for both schools. Newport improves to 4-3 overall while the Warriors drop to 1-8.
Statistical standouts for Philomath included senior Nora Stanley with 14 kills and four ace serves, junior Addison Rice with seven assists and senior Cheyenne Adams with six assists.
The Warriors will take the court again at 6 p.m. Friday with a nonconference home match against Ontario. The Tigers entered a Thursday match at Pendleton with a 3-4 record. Philomath defeated Ontario in two sets during a tournament earlier this month at Estacada.
