The Philomath High girls tennis team posted a dominant opening day at the Special District 2 Tournament on Monday by winning six of eight matches at Molalla High School to position multiple players and doubles teams for runs heading into the tournament’s continuation Thursday and Friday at the Salem Swim and Tennis Club.

In singles play, Warriors senior Lucy King opened with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory over Stayton senior Miranda Ritchie. Junior Lucy Thomas weathered a middle-set stumble to outlast Estacada junior Ruby Anderson 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, while junior Cecilia Milesi defeated North Marion senior Anette Duran 6-1, 6-2.

The lone singles setback came at the hands of Cascade senior Kohyn Daugherty, who rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Philomath sophomore Ella Hammonds 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Warriors won three of four matches in doubles. Senior Maggie King and junior Lizzie Workman delivered the day’s most lopsided result with a 6-0, 6-0 win over North Marion seniors Ariel Zurita and Rebeca Gonzalez. Seniors Logan Cook and Lacey Bacho posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Molalla senior Flor Nicolas Vega and junior Nataly Venegas. Sophomores Bethany Cannon and Bella Nuñez took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Junction City senior Daniela Castillo Geronimo and sophomore Julia Szalaj.

Philomath senior Lucie Oster and junior Clara Neville fell in a three-set battle to Junction City seniors Ivy Salazar and Gracie Waine, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The tournament continues Thursday and Friday at the Salem Swim and Tennis Club.
