The Philomath High School wrestling team defeated three of the four opponents it faced Saturday in a Special District 2 Duals event at Sweet Home.
The Warriors defeated Newport, 49-18, Junction City, 48-23, and Stayton, 47-12, with the loss coming to Cascade, 54-22. In matches decided on the mat, Philomath won 22 of 31 combined against the four opposing teams.
Junior Riley Barrett had a perfect appearance by winning four 150-pound matches — three on technical falls and one on a pin in 32 seconds. Senior River Sandstrom, junior Derick Kohn and senior JJ Lewis also finished the day unbeaten. Sandstrom at 120 had a two pins and a technical fall; Kohn wrestled two matches at 215 and one at 285 and went 3-0 all on pins; and Lewis wrestled twice and won both on pins.
Junior Liam Bennett and sophomore Chase Leslie both won two of three matches. Bennett at 165 won twice on pins and had a loss on a major decision at 165 pounds. Leslie’s three matches at 190 were all decided on pins with two wins and a loss, one of those victories coming in 32 seconds.
Sophomore Odin Compton split four matches at 132 with the victories coming on pins. Junior Porter Compton also had a 2-2 day with wins on a technical fall and pin. Both of his losses were on close decisions of 6-3 against Cascade and 7-3 against Stayton.
Philomath had two different wrestlers competing at 138. Junior Lukas Hernandez went 1-1 with the win coming on an 11-6 decision vs. Newport. Sophomore Wyatt Barrett also went 1-1 and his win came on a pin in just 22 seconds vs. Stayton, the fastest PHS win of the day.
Philomath is scheduled to compete Jan. 17-18 at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond. Junior varsity boys and varsity girls will head to the Nick Lutz Invitational at Siuslaw High in Florence.
