Editor’s note: This report is based on information submitted by the Philomath Police Department. All calls for service may not be included. The status of incidents might change after further investigation. Locations are approximate and may not be included if it could identify victims of certain crimes of a sensitive nature (sexual abuse, stalking, etc.). Individuals are identified in the log only if arrested on felony charges. Calls that involve the Department of Human Services and minor children are not included. Juveniles are not identified. People arrested or suspected of crimes are considered innocent until proven otherwise.

FRIDAY, AUG. 8

• 10:21 a.m. — Police responded to a report of fraud involving an unknown person who was reportedly impersonating the owner of a property and trying to sell it. The realtor was notified and the owner was advised to report it to the police.

Other calls: Police responses included a suspicious vehicle at 2:12 a.m. (South 12th Street and Applegate Street) and a 911 hang-up call at 8:28 a.m. (Main Street). In addition, police assisted other agencies on calls at 6:39 a.m. (North Seventh Street), 1:07 p.m. (Highway 20) and 3 p.m. (Main Street). PPD reported eight traffic stops.

SATURDAY, AUG. 9

• 2:11 a.m. — Police responded to the 5200 block of Southwest Philomath Boulevard in Corvallis for a report of a juvenile who suffered an accidental gunshot to the femur.

• 2:18 a.m. — Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of College Street. Upon arrival, a 36-year-old Philomath man was found deceased in the roadway. See separate story.

• 5:39 p.m. — Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at Dairy Queen involving a couple. The caller reported seeing an altercation, which included a man grabbing a woman, who was holding a child. The individuals were gone upon arrival by police but were later stopped by Corvallis Police. The woman reported that she was not a victim and the man was yelling at another individual. Police did not find any evidence of a crime.

Other calls: Police responses included an extra patrol at 1:11 a.m. (Main Street), suspicious vehicle at 1:25 a.m. (South 11th Street), car alarm going off multiple times at 4:03 a.m. (North 12th Street) and a traffic hazard at 9:21 a.m. (North 19th Street and Main Street). PPD reported three traffic stops.

SUNDAY, AUG. 10

• No calls of significance were reported.

Other calls: Police responses included a report of a vehicle parked in a bike lane at 1:25 p.m. (North 19th Street) and an extra patrol at 9:51 p.m. (South Ninth Street). PPD reported five traffic stops.

MONDAY, AUG. 11

• No calls of significance were reported.

Other calls: Police responses included motorist assistance at 12:05 a.m. (Main Street), welfare check at 11:39 a.m. (Newton Street), citizen assistance at 1:44 p.m. (Newton Place) and a welfare check at 5:42 p.m. (Main Street). PPD reported one traffic stop.

TUESDAY, AUG. 12

• 8:27 a.m. — Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the 500 block of North 19th Street involving a motorist in a Ford F250 that hit a building. No other details were made available other than a report was taken and assigned a case number.

• 8:39 p.m. — Police responded to a report of a man who was not a city employee cutting grass on city property at South Ninth Street and Applegate Street. The man claimed to have permission from Public Works employees.

Other calls: Police responses included a dog barking at 2:32 a.m. (Applegate Street), non-911 issue at 2:35 p.m. (North 15th Street), welfare check at 8:48 p.m. (South 13th Street) and an extra patrol at 4:45 a.m. (location not reported). PPD reported four traffic stops.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 13

• 3:08 p.m. — Police arrested a 47-year-old Philomath man at College Street and North 16th Street on a warrant for failure to appear in court.

• 6:13 p.m. — Police arrested a 32-year-old Coos Bay man on a misdemeanor charge of second-degree theft of services following an incident at the Philomath Liquor Store. According to police, staff reported that the man put a 750-millileter bottle of liquor in his pants and walked out of the store, but then returned to ask if they had Red Bull. A Benton County Sheriff’s Office deputy found the bottle nearby in bushes. The Benton County Jail was full and would not accept the man for booking and instead, he was taken to the Philomath Police Department where he was cited and released.

Other calls: Police responses included a dog found (Main Street), wallet found at gas station (Main Street), dog in a hot vehicle at 2:36 p.m. (South Seventh Street), dog found at 6:31 p.m. (Richard Place) and citizen assistance at 7:03 p.m. (South 16th Street). PPD reported two traffic stops.

THURSDAY, AUG. 14

• 5:40 a.m. — Police assisted the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at the scene of a single-vehicle crash at North 19th Street and Industrial Way involving a Honda Element that had swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

Other calls: Police responses included dog at large at 1:33 p.m. (Quail Glenn Drive) and a noise disturbance at 9:45 p.m. (Applegate Street). In addition, police assisted another agency on a call at 3:47 p.m. (Newton Street). PPD reported four traffic stops.

FRIDAY, AUG. 15

• 11:14 p.m. — Police responded to a report of a person screaming for help in the 100 block of South 14th Street. Upon arrival, police could not hear anyone screaming and approached a group of men who said they had not heard or seen anyone else in the area while suggesting that perhaps they had accidentally been too loud.

Other calls: Police responses included two suspicious door-to-door salesmen at 4:16 p.m. (North 13th Street). In addition, police assisted other agencies on calls at 1:54 a.m. (Southwest 53rd Street and Southwest Plymouth Drive, Corvallis), 3:16 p.m. (Southwest Philomath Boulevard, Corvallis) and 6:47 p.m. (Highway 20 near Blodgett). PPD reported 11 traffic stops.

SATURDAY, AUG. 16

• 8 p.m. — Police arrested a 48-year-old Philomath man on a felony charge of strangulation/domestic violence. Benton County Jail was full and police were not able to book the suspect. Instead, he was issued a no-contact release agreement and cited in lieu of custody.

• 9:40 p.m. — Police assisted the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at the site of a traffic stop on Highway 34 near Foxglove Lane. A 45-year-old Philomath man was arrested by BCSO on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants (drugs) and reckless driving.

• 10:25 p.m. — Police assisted at the scene of a disabled vehicle in the McDonald’s drive-thru.

Other calls: Police responses included an animal complaint at 6:49 p.m. (South 13th Street and Chapel Drive) and a suspicious circumstance at 7:51 a.m. (Neabeack Hill Drive and Woodbine Place). PPD reported eight traffic stops.

SUNDAY, AUG. 17

• 12:14 a.m. — Police assisted a motorist walking with a dog east on Highway 20 just past the Kings Valley Highway intersection. The man reported that he had run out of gas near Hoskins and had been walking for almost four hours. The man and his dog were given a courtesy ride to Corvallis.

Other calls: Police responses included a dog complaint at 9:02 a.m. (south 13th Street) and a civil dispute between roommates at 10:22 a.m. (South 18th Street). In addition, police assisted another agency on a call at 12:45 a.m. (Northwest Circle Boulevard and Northwest Highland Drive). PPD reported seven traffic stops.

MONDAY, AUG. 18

• 10:16 a.m. — Police responded to a report of a woman who was allowing an aggressive dog to run off a leash on city-owned property near the Public Works building. Police were unsuccessful at contacting the woman.

• 2:04 p.m. — Police responded to Philomath Towne Pump for a report of shoplifting involving an individual who took a bag of chips and possibly a 20-ounce soda inside the store without paying. Police were unable to locate the individual.

• 3:20 p.m. — Police responded to a complaint from a man who received a suspicious medical bill and was concerned it was fraud. The office where the bill originated appeared to be valid and the man was advised on steps to take before filing a police report.

• 10:58 p.m. — Police responded to a report of an argument in the 1700 block of Maple Street. Police determined it was a person in the area who was upset about a vehicle not starting.

Other calls: Police responses included a dog found at 5:03 p.m. (James Street and Newton Place), extra patrol at 6:31 p.m. (South 23rd Street), dog at large at 6:48 p.m. (Applegate Street) and a suicidal man at 9:42 p.m. In addition, police assisted another agency at 5:57 p.m. (Cutler Lane, Corvallis). PPD reported seven traffic stops.

TUESDAY, AUG. 19

• 12:24 p.m. — Police responded to a two-vehicle incident at South 15th Street and Applegate Street through a request from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy reported that during a traffic stop, a passing vehicle clipped the law enforcement vehicle’s passenger-side mirror. Philomath Police were requested to do a damage report.

• 3:57 p.m. — Police responded to a request from a veterinarian’s office on Applegate Street to help find an injured cat that ran off. Food and water was set out for the cat.

Other calls: Police responses included an extra patrol at 2:44 a.m. (Clemens Mill Road), dog barking at 4:16 a.m. (Sunrose Court), dog found at 5:03 p.m. (Cedar Place) and a report of trespassing at 8:24 p.m. (Main Street). In addition, police assisted another agency on a call at 4:41 p.m. (Gellatly Way). PPD reported two traffic stops.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 20

• 7:59 a.m. — Police responded to a report in the North 11th Street and Quail Glenn Drive vicinity of a male driver who consistently runs stop signs in the area where he lives. Police told the person making the complaint that more patrolling would be done in that section of town.

• 11:59 a.m. — Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at North 15th Street and Main Street. No injuries were reported.

Other calls: Police responses included a mental health issue at 7:52 a.m., suicidal individual at 9:26 a.m., citizen assistance at 11:56 a.m. (Philomath City Park), event detail at 12:11 p.m. (South 19th Street), event detail at 3:20 p.m. (Philomath High School) and a suicidal woman at 8:52 p.m. PPD reported no traffic stops.
