A 36-year-old Philomath man was shot and killed in the early morning hours on Saturday at a residence in the 600 block of College Street, according to a news release by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
The Philomath Police Department was dispatched at 2:18 a.m. Aug. 9 to the scene for a report of a shooting. In a social media post, the response was categorized as a welfare check but there were serious overtones with police asking the public to avoid the area.
Streets were blocked off and citizens were told that there was no threat to public safety.
According to the sheriff’s office, preliminary information indicates the incident began as a domestic assault involving family members. Gerardo Martinez Flores, 36, of Philomath, was shot while attacking another individual with a knife. Martinez Flores was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation is continuing with the Benton County Major Crimes Team, with all involved parties cooperating, according to BCSO. No arrest had been announced as of Monday afternoon.
