The Philomath High School boys basketball team had chances in the final seconds to pull off a win at Woodburn on Tuesday night but the ball wouldn’t drop and the Bulldogs held on to a 48-47 victory.
Warriors coach Blake Ecker said the team had several shots near the end of the game, including a tip-in opportunity with 0.3 on the clock. Woodburn improved to 7-1 on the season, its only loss coming to Philomath on May 21.
Philomath (5-3) trailed by six points going into the second quarter but put together its best 8 minutes of the game to take a 31-29 lead at halftime. In the second, Ty May scored eight of his 10 points and Philomath drilled a trio of 3-pointers on shots by Chase Beardsley, Cole Matthews and Dillon Olsen.
The Warriors offense sputtered in the second half, however.
“We played a really good second quarter,” Ecker said. “In the third, we had lots of turnovers. It was a game we could have won if we were a bit sharper on the offensive side.”
Beardsley had a team-high 12 points for Philomath. Jonathan Marroquin scored 14 and Spencer Karsseboom had 12 for the Bulldogs.
Philomath is scheduled to play Friday at Sisters.
