The Philomath High School girls soccer team dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 3-1 road loss against Gladstone.
The Gladiators (2-0) went up 1-0 in the game’s 16th minute and maintained that margin through the rest of the first half. In the second half, Gladstone scored a goal in the 60th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
During the late-game flurry, Gladstone scored a third goal in the 78th minute and Philomath got on the scoreboard in the 79th to account for the final score. Freshman Isabelle Morales-Marquez scored Philomath’s goal with an assist to sophomore Kamilla Grimmer.
“It was really good for us to see our weaknesses and work on them,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said. “They are a top-notch team and we battled with them and had some really close chances.”
The Gladiators, which lost to the Warriors in the 4A Showcase quarterfinals during the spring 2020 season, were ranked No. 7 in the OSAAtoday preseason coaches poll. The team’s opener was a 7-0 win over another Oregon West team in Stayton. Philomath came into the season ranked No. 5 and had opened with a 1-0 win over North Marion.
Philomath will next play on Tuesday with a home appearance against Cascade. The Cougars will enter the contest with an 0-1 record.
