Boys soccer posts 3rd straight shutout, 5-0, at Blanchet Catholic

The Philomath High School boys soccer team is off to one of its best starts in recent memory with a third straight shutout to open the season. The Warriors’ latest victim, Blanchet Catholic, went down on Tuesday evening by a score of 5-0.

The Warriors (3-0) will play at home at 4 p.m. Thursday against Gladstone to wrap up the nonconference portion of the schedule. Philomath’s other wins this season came over North Marion (1-0) and Molalla (3-0).

Against the Cavaliers, Philomath took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute when senior Mark Grimmer found the net off a cross from junior Mateo Candanoza that senior Noah Aynes had set up. Grimmer slotted the defenders for the 1-0 lead.

In the 10th minute, senior Dylan Bell scored on a post header off of a corner kick by junior Chase Ringwald. The game remained 2-0 throughout the rest of the first half.

Philomath put the game away in the 46th minute on Grimmer’s second goal. On this one, Grimmer scored with an assist to junior Seth Arthurs. Philomath went up 4-0 after Grimmer stole the ball and powered a right-footed shot past Blanchet’s keeper in the 60th minute.

In the 77th minute, junior Teddy Benbow scored on a follow-up shot after Cascade’s keeper stopped and then dropped a first attempt at the net.

Blanchet Catholic dropped to 0-1-1 with the loss.

Gladstone will enter Thursday’s game at Philomath with an 0-1 record. The Gladiators haven’t played since an Aug. 31 loss to Stayton, 5-0.
