Senior Riley Barrett remained undefeated on the season with a first-place finish at 150 pounds to lead Philomath to an eighth-place showing at the Cottage Grove Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Warriors scored 104.5 points in the 41-team field, finishing behind champion Eagle Point (272.5), Harrisburg (186.5), Dallas (178.5), North Bend (123.5), McMinnville (120.5), Marshfield (116.5) and Oakridge (109).
Barrett improved to 19-0 with four victories over the two-day tournament. He opened with a 17-0 technical fall over Jake Palluck of Cottage Grove in 2:19, then pinned South Umpqua’s Mason Johnson in 1:18 in the quarterfinals. Barrett advanced to the championship match with a 10-0 major decision over Earl Oliver of Madras before claiming the title with a 10-1 major decision over St. Helens’ Greg Hall.
Senior Porter Compton took second place at 157 pounds with a 4-1 tournament record. Compton won his first four matches — posting technical falls over Gage Thornton of Grants Pass (18-2) and Kyle George of South Umpqua (18-3), pinning North Bend’s John Willett in 5:36, and recording an 8-0 major decision over Sean McFall of Eagle Point in the semifinals. Compton fell to Mason Stucky of Sheldon by pin in the championship match.
Senior Lake Mulberry finished fourth at 190 pounds, going 4-2 in the tournament. Mulberry opened strong with three consecutive victories — technical falls over Dallas’ Joshua Armstrong (19-2) and Rainier’s Easton Marsh (18-2), and a 25-second pin of Benjamin Hernandez Jr. of Eagle Point. After dropping an 8-5 decision to Bryce Williardt of North Lake in the semifinals, Mulberry bounced back with a 13-2 major decision over Malachi Loe of North Valley in the consolation semifinals before falling to Gage Mills of Siuslaw by pin in the third-place match.
Senior Derick Kohn placed sixth at 215 pounds with a 3-3 record. Kohn pinned Cottage Grove’s Caleb Bruner in 1:59 before losing an 8-4 decision to Hayden Belcher of Rainier in the quarterfinals. In consolation rounds, Kohn recorded pins over North Valley’s Jesse Vejar (3:38) and Ashland’s Jack Maybin (2:18) before dropping an 18-1 technical fall to Carson Langford of Dallas and an 11-7 decision to Jordan Florez of Coquille in the fifth-place match.
Senior Lukas Hernandez went 5-2 at 144 pounds. He opened by pinning Springfield’s Hunter Foster in 2:56 before losing a 19-4 technical fall to Caden Cunningham of Phoenix. Hernandez then won four straight consolation matches — pinning Dylan Olsen of Oakridge (2:20) and Austin Thorp of South Umpqua (2:38), and posting decisions over Samuel Neider of Scappoose (9-8) and Camilo Palmas of Coquille (18-15 in sudden victory). His tournament ended with a 21-18 sudden victory loss to Gage Hamann of Eagle Point.
Also competing for the Warriors were senior Braydon Williams (1-2) at 126 pounds and freshman Max Grapoli (0-2) at 132 pounds.
Next up for Philomath will be the 4A Special District 2 tournament at Newport on Feb. 14.
