A 22-year-old Woodburn man lost control of his vehicle Saturday morning on Highway 18 in Yamhill County and crashed head-on into a car driven by a 21-year-old Philomath woman, Oregon State Police reported.
The Woodburn man, Giovanni Zamora, was declared deceased at the scene. The Philomath woman, Mary Spiller, was transported to an area hospital reportedly with serious injuries.
According to a report from OSP, the preliminary investigation indicated that Zamora was driving east in an Acura CL when he lost control, drifted to the right side of the roadway and then overcorrected into oncoming traffic. He was struck by a Toyota Avalon operated by Spiller.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, OSP said, with speed being considered as a primary contributor.
The on-scene investigation impacted the highway for approximately four hours. Assisting OSP at the scene were Dayton Fire and Rescue, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, Newburg-Dundee Police Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
