Coming off a thrilling overtime victory on Thursday, the Philomath High boys basketball team came out flat against Redmond on Friday in the semifinals of the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament in Coos Bay. The 5A Panthers worked to a 2-16 lead in the first half before the two teams played evenly in the second half in what ended up as a 52-38 final.
Redmond senior Garrett Osborne burned the nets for 29 points, including four 3-pointers.
Senior Cole Matthews had his top scoring game of the season so far with 14 points on five fields and a pair of free throws. Matthews hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Junior Chad Russell chipped in eight points on three field goals and a couple of free throws.
The Panthers (5-3) move on to the championship game against the host school, Marshfield, while the Warriors drop down into a third-place matchup against Crook County. The Cowboys will bring a 2-4 record into the game with Philomath now sitting at 3-3. The game is scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. tip-off.
In Friday’s 3-point contest, Cole Beardsley defeated his first-round opponent to reach the semifinals where he bowed out. Matthews also participated and came up short in the first round.
