The Philomath High School boys basketball team survived the first round of the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament in Coos Bay late Thursday night with a 52-50 overtime victory over Cascade Christian.

Junior Chad Russell scored all four of Philomath’s points in the OT period — the game-winner with 1.4 seconds left — to send the Warriors into a semifinal matchup against Class 5A Redmond. The Panthers pulled out a 46-42 victory over Junction City, a team that edged the Warriors back on Dec. 4.

In the game against Cascade Christian, a 3A school out of Medford, Philomath had a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter at 17-12. The Warriors were in sync from long range with senior Cole Matthews, junior Ty May and junior Cole Beardsley all hitting 3-pointers during those opening 8 minutes.

Fewer offensive fireworks were seen in the second quarter but Philomath extended its lead to seven points at 23-16.

Cascade Christian (1-1) came out for the second half with an effective attack and outscored the Warriors by 10 points to take a 35-32 lead into the fourth quarter. After scoring just 15 points in the second and third quarters combined, Philomath regrouped for 16 in the fourth with most of those coming at the foul line.

The Warriors (3-2) sank 10 of 13 shots on the free-throw line in the final 8 minutes with May alone hitting on eight of 10. May scored 10 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter.

In addition to May’s points, Russell and Beardsley each finished with eight and Matthews had seven.

Cascade Christian’s 6-foot-11 center Austin Maurer, a Division 1 prospect, scored 23. Teammate Cody Reece had 11.

Friday’s game against Redmond is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at Marshfield High School.
