The Philomath and Hidden Valley girls basketball teams are scheduled to face off on Tuesday in the Warriors’ home gym but the two high schools got to know each other a few days early with a first-round matchup on Thursday in the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament in Coos Bay.

Philomath got 22 points from Sage Kramer in a 43-35 victory over the Mustangs.

‘We did a good job causing issues on the defensive end,” PHS coach Ben Silva said. “We turned the ball over a lot … didn’t really get into a rhythm on the offensive end until late in the third quarter.”

The two teams were tied at halftime, 18-18. The Warriors struggled at the free-throw line in the first half by hitting just 4 of 13. In the third quarter, Philomath outscored the Mustangs, 14-6, to create a cushion going into the final 8 minutes.

Kramer, a senior, scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half, which included a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Junior Abigail Brown finished with nine points with seven in the first half. As a team, the Warriors ended up shooting 37.5% from the foul line.

Skylar Willey scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs (3-3).

Philomath (3-1) advances into the semifinals of the tournament, which is being hosted by Marshfield High School. The Warriors will face another familiar opponent with a 5:15 p.m. matchup against Junction City in the MHS main gym. Philomath defeated Junction City, 48-42, on Dec. 4.
