The Philomath High School girls and boys swim teams got a taste over the weekend of the level of competition and the venue that they will see next month at the Special District 3 meet.

Competing at Albany Community Pool, the Warriors had one victory and a dozen top-four finishes. Senior Carrson Hirte posted the win for Philomath with his performance in the 50-yard backstroke. Hirte swam the event in 27.15 seconds to win by a margin of a half-second over the runner-up.

Hirte also had a second-place finish with his time of 52.16 in the 100-yard freestyle in a close race with Clayten Heuberer of Sisters, who touched first in 51.38.

Senior Kellen Houchin also had a pair of top-four finishes with second in the 50 breaststroke (33.15) and third in the 50 butterfly 30.42). Houchin was within 1 second of the winner in both events.

Also in the 50 fly, freshman Cameron McLennan placed fourth in 30.91.

The 200 medley relay had a close race with Marist Catholic for the top time. Philomath finished second in 1:58.78 — just 0.12 of a second behind the Eugene team. Swimming for the Warriors on the relay were junior Henry Katsikis, Houchin, Hirte and senior Micah Matthews.

For the girls, sophomore Kyah Weeber placed second in the 50 breaststroke (37.28) and third in the 100 individual medley (1:15.93). Weeber barely got beat out for first in the breaststroke race with North Marion’s Sofia Vachter winning by .14 of a second.

PHS had a pair of third-place finishes with senior Allison Neelands in the 200 freestyle (2:24.55) and senior Katherine Holden in the 50 backstroke (41:04). Sophomore Hanna McDaniel was fourth in the 50 breaststroke (39.21).

The 200 medley relay placed third with freshman Kathleen Donovan, sophomore Kateri Pindell, Weeber and junior Madison Juhl. The foursome covered the distance in 2:23.68.

All of the schools in Special District 4 competed at Saturday’s meet with the Warriors — Blanchet Catholic, Cascade, Junction City, Kennedy, Marist Catholic, North Marion, Salem Academy, Sisters, Stayton and Sweet Home. The meet’s final results did not include team scoring.

Albany Community Pool will host the Special District 4 meet on Feb. 10.

Up next for the Warriors will be a jaunt over to Sweet Home for a meet on Friday.
