Taking the court on Monday night at Stayton, the Philomath High School volleyball team knew it had some catching up to do. The Eagles were heading into their sixth match of the season while the Warriors were finally playing a season opener.
Stayton improved to 5-1 on the season with a 25-22, 25-17, 23-25 and 26-24 victory.
“We were very green in the first two sets,” PHS coach Denee Newton said. “Our setter started connecting with our hitters in the third set. We really have to work on reducing our unforced errors and take control of the passing and serving game.”
Philomath High’s late arrival to the Oregon West dance was due to Benton County’s extreme COVID risk level, which dropped to high this past Friday. The Warriors were able to get only two full in-gym practices in before facing the Eagles.
Junior Sage Kramer led in the hitting department with 17 kills. Sophomore Maddie Fields added 14 and sophomore Abigail Brown had nine.

Junior Reagan Larson had a team-high five ace serves and 41 set assists. Brown had three aces. Junior Taylor Roe finished with a team-high 23 digs.
The team played without junior Laura Noble, who is working through a concussion, Newton said. As a result, the team moved up some freshmen to the varsity roster for the match.
