The Philomath High School boys soccer team came up short in a high-scoring affair on the road Thursday night with a 6-4 loss to Molalla.
The Indians never trailed and had a 3-2 advantage in each half. Molalla improves to 3-2 on the season while the Warriors drop to 1-3-1.
Down 1-0, Philomath tied the score in the 22nd minute on a goal by junior Sammy Hernandez with an assist by Oliver Demasi. Then after Molalla had regained the lead, the Warriors again tied the match on a shot by freshman Skyler Wilson with an assist by junior Dreyton Nuño — that coming in the 29th minute.
Molalla was able to take a one-goal lead into the intermission after scoring in the 35th minute.
The score remained 3-2 well into the second half but Molalla came through in the 55th minute for a two-goal advantage. Philomath cut the deficit back down to one five minutes later when Nuño found the net. Molalla responded in the 70th and 73rd minutes to build a 6-3 lead. The Warriors scored their fourth goal in the 75th minute with Hernandez finishing.
Philomath will play its first home game of the season Sept. 24 vs. Newport. The game will also represent the conference opener for both teams.
