Sophomore Riley Barrett and freshman Odin Compton won first-place medals and were among 10 of 13 Warriors who placed in Saturday’s 18-school Sherwood Invitational.

The Warriors were third as a team, an impressive accomplishment considering the tournament featured 11 Class 6A and five Class 5A schools.

Barrett, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and unbeaten this season, escaped with a 5-4 decision in the 150-pound championship match against Lebanon’s Seth Wynn, one of the top wrestlers in his weight division in 5A.

It was only the fourth time this season that Barrett has gone the full six minutes with two of those wins coming against Wynn. Barrett beat Wynn, 7-2, in the finals of the Burton 5 Enterprises Invitational on Jan. 12.

Barrett was dominant in his earlier matches at Sherwood with four straight victories on pins in under a minute — 47, 32, 51 and 54 seconds.

Odin Compton, meanwhile, won a high school tournament for the first time with a 6-4 decision over Grant’s Olin Waxler in the 120-pound finale. He defeated opponents in the earlier rounds on a technical fall and a pair of second-period pins. In the semifinals, he pinned McMinnville’s Bradley Woolridge in 2:47.

Sophomores Porter Compton and Lake Mulberry settled for runner-up finishes in their respective weight divisions. Junior River Sandstrom and sophomore Lukas Hernandez earned third-place meals.

Porter Compton rolled into the semifinals at 138 with three straight pins and then advanced to the finals with a 5-3 sudden victory over Sandy’s Nicholas Yarnell. He faced another Sandy wrestler, Mason Culp, and battled to the end but lost on a 6-2 decision.

Mulberry had two first-period pins in his early matches, won on a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals and on a 5-2 decision in the semifinals to reach the 215-pound finals. Sandy’s Matthew Tammad beat Mulberry for first on a pin in 3:17.

Sandstrom won three of four matches at 113 for third place. He won his first two matches by decided margins on a 17-2 technical fall and 17-6 major decision. In the semifinals, he dropped a 10-4 decision before a strong finish in the third-place match with a 4-1 decision over Sandy’s Garrett Head.

Wrestling at 132, Hernandez took out his first three opponents on pins before losing to Sandy’s Caleb Rinard in the semifinals. Hernandez bounced back to win the third-place match over South Albany’s Dhonavanh Cain on a 13-9 decision.

Junior Ari Hammond placed fourth at 144 pounds. He had a pin, technical fall and major decision in his first three matches before falling in the semifinals on a pin and in the third-place match on a major decision.

Three other wrestlers placed with senior Gradin Fairbanks getting sixth at 165, sophomore Liam Bennett finishing seventh at 157 and sophomore Derick Kohn placing seventh at 190.

Senior Jacob Hamlet also won three of four matches at 285 but because of a loss in the first round and with the way the brackets were set up, he didn’t wrestle for a placing. Still, he bounced back after the early loss to win three straight on first-period pins.

Juniors Ryder Zitlau (150) and Cameron McConnell (144) also won matches in the tournament.
