In a girls soccer match Thursday night with first-place implications in the Oregon West Conference, Philomath High remained unbeaten with a 6-3 victory at Newport.

The Warriors lead the league with a 5-0 record with North Marion right behind at 4-1. Newport slips to third at 3-2.

The Warriors led 3-1 at halftime with goals by junior Jordyn Hood in the 14th minute, sophomore Bethany Cannon in the 22nd minute and sophomore Kya Bolton in the 39th minute. Bolton had an assist on the first goal and senior Ana Candanoza assisted on the third.

In the second half, Philomath took a 5-1 lead. Bolton scored in the 41st minute with an assist by sophomore Bella Nunez. In the 54th minute, Cannon had her second goal of the game with an assist credited to Nunez. After Newport pulled to within 5-3 with a couple of goals, the Warriors finished off the opponent in the 77th minute when senior Logan Cook scored with an assist by Candanoza.

“We played really well for the most part,” Warriors coach Mat Phelps said. “We just had 10 to 15 minutes of letdown while the game was in control.”

Philomath goes to 9-1 overall and will play on the road again Tuesday with a trip to Sweet Home.
