The Philomath High School volleyball team won its third straight match to keep pace with Cascade in the Oregon West Conference standings, defeating Sweet Home on the road Thursday evening in straight sets.
“We played well tonight offensively and did a good job scrambling on defense,” PHS coach Whitney Thomas said following the 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 victory.
Philomath goes to 5-1 in league play and has a two-game lead over third-place Stayton. Cascade leads the conference with a 6-0 mark. The Warriors and the Cougars will meet next Thursday in the PHS gym.
Thomas called the victory over Sweet Home a great team effort.
“Isabelle (Muir) played great defense and executed well on serve receive,” she said. “Taylor (Hudson) and Alyssa (Stanley) had a great night at the net and got their hands on lots of blocks to slow down the ball for our back-row players. Shaylee (May) and Nora (Stanley) led the offensive stats tonight and played really well when we needed them to.”
Nora Stanley and May each finished with 14 kills and Hudson had eight. Alyssa Stanley had three stuff blocks and setter Avery Smith ended up with 31 assists.
Before the showdown with Cascade, the Warriors (11-4 overall) must first take care of business at home Tuesday against Stayton. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
