The Philomath High School volleyball team competed in a large tournament Saturday with a successful run in pool play before falling to Burns in the “gold bracket.”

The Warriors defeated Marist Catholic, 25-15, 25-18, and Klamath Union, 25-20, 25-17, in pool play and split with Valley Catholic, 22-25, 25-23. The split with the Valiants was noteworthy with that team entering the tournament ranked No. 1 in the most recent coaches’ poll. Valley Catholic did fall to No. 2 Sisters in tournament play, however, and will likely fall from the top spot.

The Warriors advanced to bracketed play and lost in its first match against Burns, 25-22, 21-25 and 15-7. The Hilanders are a top Class 3A team that went on to also lose to Sisters in the tournament.

Philomath will head back to Sisters on Tuesday for an Oregon West Conference match. The Outlaws come into the meeting with a 9-1 overall record — the lone setback coming to a 5A school. The Warriors are sitting at 3-3 overall and after the road trip, will come home to host Stayton on Thursday.
