Philomath High School junior Levi Storch and sophomore Maggie Real were sworn in last week as student representatives on the Philomath School Board.

School Board Vice Chair Erin Gudge, who presided over the Oct. 10 meeting in the absence of Chair Rick Wells, led the swearing-in after both students had shared a bit about themselves.

“I would like to work on making life better and more secure and making students feel welcome,” Real said, “because high school is a very hard four years, teachers change a lot and I want to make that as easy as possible.”

Both students listed off some of the activities that they are involved with on campus. In addition, Storch mentioned their involvement with the Marys River Youth Watershed Council.

Superintendent of Schools Susan Halliday said the students were chosen through a process at the high school that had been completed Oct. 9.

This will be the first time that two students share the position’s responsibilities. The School Board added the student representative position in 2022. Students who filled the seat in the past were Jackson Holroyd and Raegan McKinney.

Although the position allows for meeting participation, the student will not be a voting member and will be prohibited from attending executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
