The Philomath High School baseball team opened a pivotal series against Newport Monday with a 6-3 victory on the road. The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and junior Caleb Babcock threw a complete-game six-hitter in the team’s 11th straight victory.
Babcock, who was throwing on his birthday and backed up by an errorless defense, walked two and struck out eight to go to 7-0 on the season.
Hitting barrage lifts Philomath to softball win
Back in her familiar position at the top of the order, Philomath High senior Kaylie Kohler broke out of a slump in the team’s 17-7 victory over North Marion Monday at Warrior Field. Well, most might not refer to a .333 batting average over the past month as a slump — but it’s below Kohler’s…
The Warriors (17-3 overall, 10-0 Oregon West) never trailed in the game with runs in the first inning coming on a sacrifice fly by senior Grant Niemann, a bases-loaded walk by sophomore AJ Altishin and a two-run single by senior Joe Barnes.
The Cubs (16-3, 9-1) pulled to within 4-3 in the fourth but the Warriors added single runs in the fifth and seventh while holding the home team scoreless the rest of the way. In the fifth, Niemann scored on a ground ball to first by sophomore Jacob Hernandez. And in the seventh, Barnes picked up another RBI with a double to right field that scored senior Kayson Olsen.
Babcock (2 for 3), Niemann (2 for 3) and Barnes (2 for 4, three RBIs) were Philomath’s top hitters. Senior Curtis Olivera went 2 for 3 for the Cubs.
The series moves to Philomath Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game at Terry Stephenson Field.
