Philomath High School senior Adele Beckstead qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A State Tennis Championships for the fourth straight year with this week’s performance in the District 2 meet.

Beckstead advanced to the championship match where she lost to Marist Catholic sophomore Whitney Hedden, 6-0, 6-0. Beckstead reached the finale after pulling out a close victory in the semifinals over Stayton senior Laina Atiyeh, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Earlier in the tournament, she beat Molalla junior Nevaeh Schultz (6-0, 6-0), Stayton junior Faith Fortune (6-1, 6-1) and Junction City junior Paige Jamison (6-0, 6-0).

Beckstead goes to 13-3 on the season with two of those three losses against Hedden.

As a team, the Warriors (18.5 points) finished fourth behind Marist Catholic (42.5), Cascade (28) and Stayton (24.5) and ahead of four other teams in the district. Marist qualified two singles players and two doubles teams for state. Cascade advanced two doubles teams. In addition to PHS, Stayton also had a singles qualifier.

Elsewhere on the team, junior Lucy King returned to the court for the first time in 10 days and opened with wins of 7-5, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0 over opponents from Estacada and Cascade, respectively. In the quarterfinals, King lost by a 6-0, 6-2 count to Stayton’s Atiyeh.

Sophomore Lucy Thomas opened with a loss but rebounded for wins over opponents from Molalla and Junction City.

In doubles, sophomore Elisabeth Workman and junior Maggie King, and freshman Bethany Cannon and sophomore Isabelle Norman, had at least one win. Junior Lucie Oster and sophomore Clara Neville lost their opener but posted a couple of victories in the consolation rounds.

The state tournament is scheduled to run May 22-24 at the Oregon State University Tennis Complex.

Philomath High’s girls won six events while on their way to the team title at Friday’s Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove. The boys also turned in a noteworthy performance with four wins and a second-place team finish.

For the girls, senior Janice Hellesto continued a strong late-season run by winning the 100 (12.62 seconds), 200 (25.43) and long jump (17 feet, 4 inches). Senior Natalie Dunn competed in the 800 for the first time ever and took first place (2:22.16). Freshman Cassidy Smart won the 1,500 (4:51.46) in a close finish. Senior Aspen Russell was best in the pole vault (9-6).

The 4-by-100 relay with freshman Kya Bolton, Dunn, senior Petra Hernandez and Hellesto was second (49.61) and the 4-by-400 relay of senior Melea Lattin, Smart, freshman Reagan Nuño and Dunn was third (4:07.35).

Other top-four individual finishes for the girls included senior Anneka Steen in the high jump (second, 5-2), senior Hanna McDaniel in the pole vault (third, 8-6) and high jump (fourth, 5-0), and Nuño in the 400 (fourth, 1:00.89) and triple jump (fourth, 33-4).

Philomath racked up 125.5 points to outdistance runner-up Cascade’s 83.

In the boys’ competition, senior Warwick Bushnell, junior Lukas Hernandez, junior Josiah Peters and sophomore Kaden Howard had winning performances.

Bushnell won the 400 (50.55) by a fair margin and also placed second in the 200 (22.36). Hernandez won by nearly 9 seconds in the 3,000 (9:20.55), Peters had a personal-record throw to win the javelin (181-0) and Howard also had a best-ever distance with his first-place showing in the triple jump (43-6.75).

Other top-four placewinners were freshman Samuel Hernandez in the high jump (third, 5-10) and junior Leo Pausch in the 1,500 (4:08.56).

Philomath now turns its attention to the Oregon West Conference Championships, which the Warriors will host this coming Friday and Saturday at Clemens Field. The first day’s action begins at 3 p.m. with field events and 3:30 p.m. with track events. Day 2 events begin at 11 a.m. in the field and 1 p.m. on the track.

Junior varsity — The Philomath girls were third and the boys fourth at the Oregon West JV Championships Thursday at Stayton. PHS winners included Syd Cothern (1500), Hailey Eckhold (pole vault) and Annaleise Brown (triple jump) for the girls and Emmett Murch (1500), JJ Lewis (pole vault) and Andrew Arguelles (triple jump) for the boys.

BOYS TENNIS
Schell, Houck win matches at districts

PHS junior Lane Schell and sophomore Nate Houck posted victories this week at the Special District 2 meet.

Schell opened the tournament with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 loss to North Marion senior Edgar Morales but regrouped to defeat for pro-set wins over Molalla freshman Logan Rodriguez (8-0) and Stayton senior Nathan Hernandez (8-1) before a loss to Stayton senior Liam Ritchie (8-4).

Houck won his first-round match over Cascade freshman Jackson Greufe, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 before falling in the second round to Marist Catholic junior EJ Roedel, 6-0, 6-0. Roedel went on to win the singles title.

The tournament took place Monday at Estacada and Thursday and Friday at the Salem Swim and Tennis Club. Marist Catholic easily won the team title and qualified three singles and four doubles teams for state.
