The Philomath High School softball team lost its second straight with a 10-0 road loss Wednesday at Stayton, an opponent that posted its fourth straight win and is sitting in second place in the league standings.

Philomath goes to 1-7 in the Oregon West Conference, 1-16 overall and is scheduled to play at home at 4 p.m. Thursday against Newport. North Marion, Newport and Philomath are fighting for fourth place in the league standings with only one OWC win separating the three teams.

Stayton (12-4 overall, 7-1 Oregon West) got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the second inning and then pulled away in the third and fourth innings to end up winning on the 10-run rule. Sophomore Makenzie Schacher allowed two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

For Philomath, junior Laighla Hockema and freshman Riley Mason had singles — both in the first inning. Hockema went the distance at pitcher and allowed six hits, two earned runs and two walks with one strikeout.

On defense, Mason had an unassisted double play when she caught a line drive and doubled off a base runner at third.

The Warriors have a wicked week on the horizon with three straight games on the road — Monday at Sweet Home, Wednesday at North Marion and May 2 at Cascade.
