Crews from Philomath Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Forestry contained a small fire Sunday afternoon at Wren Hill Lumber, a stud and sawmill operation located about 3 miles west of Philomath on Highway 20.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the fire at 12:31 p.m. Aug. 9. According to information posted on the PulsePoint app, the blaze was under control by about 1:17 p.m.
According to Philomath Fire and Rescue, the fire started on the mill’s log landing. No evacuation levels were in effect at any point during the incident.
The department’s Ashley Scott said a large pile of bark that had been pushed off the landing self-ignited. Wren Hill Lumber staff used the mill’s heavy equipment and personnel to help extinguish the flames alongside crews from Philomath Fire and Rescue and ODF, Scott said.
Sprinklers were to remain in use at the site to provide extended protection. ODF will continue to monitor the area, Scott added.
According to information published by ODF, the fire was estimated at 0.05 acres.
Philomath Fire and Rescue said smoke could be visible in the area for several more days as crews continue to monitor hot spots.
Wren Hill Lumber, which opened in 2023, mills bigleaf maple, Douglas fir, Oregon white oak and other custom-sawn lumber at its Highway 20 site.
