This past Saturday, Philomath brought home the first-place trophy from a competition hosted by Sheldon High School. That followed the Shining Stars taking second in the 4A/3A/2A/1A division behind Valley Catholic on Feb. 5 at Canby.

It was the second straight week that Valley Catholic and Philomath had finished 1-2 at a competition.

Shining Stars team members include senior captain Ella Kelley, juniors Morgan Gross and Stella Neville, sophomores Kayli Blake, Alexa Eckhold, Gwen Hamilton, Jadyn McMullen and Abigail Workman, and freshmen Brooklynn Campbell.

Dance teams are competing in preparation for the Oregon School Activities Association dance and drill championships in March.

The dance team won the Encore Award at Sheldon and the Standing Ovation Award at Canby.

Individually, Kelley auditioned for the all-state team as well as a Dance Drill Coaches Association scholarship. Haslam said results will be announced on March 18 at state.

The Shining Stars are scheduled to next compete on Feb. 26 at Sprague. The regular season concludes March 5 at Thurston before the state championships on March 18.
