Philomath High’s Mia Rust and Sage Kramer both won medals for the girls track and field team on Friday during the first day of the 4A State Track and Field Championships at Siuslaw High School in Florence.
Rust placed third in the shot put with a distance of 37 feet even. Kramer was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 107-9.
In the only running event that had finals on Friday, sophomore Mateo Candanoza played fifth with a time of 8:59.53, a personal-best time, to highlight the boys’ results. Sophomore Micah Matthews tied for eighth in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet even.
The first day included finals in some field events and the 3,000, and had preliminaries in several running events.
For the girls, senior Alivia Pittman qualified for finals in the 100 hurdles (seventh, 16.97) and 300 hurdles (seventh, 49.92).
Advancing out of prelims and into finals for the boys were senior Sean Cummings in the 400 (third, 52.57), senior Levi Knutson in the 800 (2:05.66), sophomore Brody Bushnell in the 800 (2:06.02) and Matthews in the 110 hurdles (third, 16.08).
The state track meet’s second day begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at Siuslaw.
