The Philomath High School girls basketball team got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the first half on the road but came on strong in the third quarter to end up with a 62-35 victory over Woodburn on Friday night.
Junior Sage Kramer won a fourth-place medal in the javelin at the 4A state track meet in Florence to start her day and then made it to the evening game and scored 26 points on 10 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. Coach Ben Silva sat Kramer over the final 8 minutes with all of that offensive firepower coming in three quarters of play.
Philomath (1-0) built a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter but Woodburn released a counteroffensive in the second quarter to trail by only seven points at halftime. The Warriors regrouped after the break and went on a 22-2 run in the third quarter to put the game away.
“We were able to make some adjustments in the second half and play much better,” Silva said.
Kramer scored 12 in the first and 10 in the third for the Warriors.
Junior Reagan Larson scored 11 points on three field goals and 5 of 5 free throws. Senior Mia Rust scored nine points and was another player who got to the game after winning a medal at the state track meet earlier in the day. Rust took third in the shot put.
Silva played all 12 players that suited up for the varsity game.
Junior Aria Kent scored 19 to lead Woodburn (0-1).
The Warriors will hit the court again Saturday with their home opener against Cascade. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
