The Philomath Rotary Club plans to meet at noon Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church for an agenda that includes a discussion on the organization’s peace pole project. All Rotarians and community members are welcome to attend.
Members will talk about plans to schedule the installation of seven peace poles at Philomath schools and Philomath Community Services with organizers also looking to enlist two or three additional community businesses or organizations to host poles of their own.
The six school sites for installation of the poles include Blodgett Elementary, Clemens Primary, Philomath Elementary, Philomath Middle School, Philomath High and the building that houses both Philomath Academy and Philomath School District’s office.
Peace poles are a global symbol rooted in a movement that originated in Japan more than 50 years ago. An estimated 200,000 poles have been planted on every continent.
The assembly will also cover Rotary-sponsored programs, awards and fundraisers benefiting Philomath schools students, along with efforts to engage city and county officials on a role for the club going forward.
The meeting’s main presentation will come from Philomath High School exchange student Kathleen Donovan, who will share her experience from the past school year in Brazil.
A Rotary board meeting will follow at 1 p.m.
Lunch will be provided for attendees. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to the meeting invitation or any Philomath Rotarian to help organizers plan for the appropriate number of meals.
