The Philomath City Council unanimously approved a resolution at its Monday night meeting proclaiming Aug. 2-8 as National Farmers Market Week.
The resolution recognizes the role farmers markets play in providing access to fresh, locally grown produce, supporting local economies and creating gathering spaces for the community. The resolution specifically credits the Philomath Farmers’ Market with championing food access “for all through vital programs, ensuring that fresh and nutritious food is available to households of all income levels.”
Assistant City Manager Chelsea Starner told the council the proclamation request actually dates back a year.
“Last year, when we were learning our new website, there was a request to the council to have this put in an agenda,” Starner said. “But there was a glitch with the website. It didn’t notify us. We found it in December.”
City staff asked the mayor at the time whether they could bring the proclamation back for this year.
City Councilor Diane Crocker praised how much the market has expanded since it began.
“I just am impressed with how the farmers market has grown every year,” Crocker said. “When it first started it was a little sparse and now there’s no room — it’s amazing.”
National Farmers Market Week is an annual observance recognizing the contributions of farmers markets nationwide.
Mayor Christopher McMorran read the proclamation aloud after its passage.
The Philomath Farmers’ Market runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 18 along Applegate Street in the Philomath Community Library and Philomath Police Department parking lots.
