Community blood drives are planned at two locations in Philomath during the month of February, according to the American Red Cross.

Peace Lutheran Church (2540 Applegate St.) will host a blood drive from 12:30-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17. Philomath Fire & Rescue (1035 Main St.) is also scheduled to host a blood drive from noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.

As of Friday morning, 25 appointments remained available at both sites.

The American Red Cross said February often brings unpredictable winter weather that can cause blood drive cancellations and make it difficult for donors to make it to their appointments safely.

“As the American Red Cross continues to monitor seasonal challenges that could impact the blood supply, donors are urged to make and keep appointments to help prevent a shortage in the weeks to come,” the organization said in a press release. “Donors of all blood types — particularly type O blood donors, the most needed blood group by hospitals — and platelet donors are needed daily to meet the needs of patients.”

To make an appointment to donate blood:

• Download the American Red Cross blood donor app.

• Visit RedCrossBlood.org (click here for a list of Philomath blood drives).

• Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Oregon residents who are at least age 16, weigh 110 pounds or more and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Oregon still requires face masks be worn at all blood drives and donation sites.

The American Red Cross announced that anyone who donates blood in February will receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card by email and automatically entered to win a trip for two to Clearwater Beach, Florida.
