George Mercer, deceased, was born January 15, 1829, and died August 6, 1914, aged 85 years, 6 months and 27 days. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio, crossed the plains in 1853, and located in Benton county, residing near Bellfountain all the time until his death. He was married May 14, 1857, to Elizabeth Starr, of Benton county. To them were born seven children, of whom six survive. Albert and Lester in Albert, Canada; Walter, in Washington; John, in Portland; and George and Bertha, at home. Mr. Mercer was a charter member of the First Presbyterian church of Corvallis, and a member of the Oak Ridge Presbyterian church at the time of his death. He served Benton county many years as surveyor, was a man of letters and extensive reading, a public spirited citizen and was an ardent worker for any cause he thought to be right. Benton county has lost a respected citizen.
