Philomath senior Kyah Weeber, junior Cameron McLennan and sophomore Lucas Brandt each won two individual swimming events in a home tri-meet Friday afternoon at Clemens Community Pool.
Weeber won both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. In the 100 fly, she had to beat out only one other swimmer and finished with a time of 1:11.89 — a victory of nearly 5 seconds. Weeber swam alone in the 100 back to a time of 1:13.61.
Senior Hanna McDaniel and sophomore Kate Burriel also had victories in the individual events for the girls. McDaniel took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:26.83, edging senior teammate Kateri Pindell by 0.29 of a second. Burriel won the 200 freestyle by more than 6 seconds with a time of 2:39.25.
The only entries in the 200 medley relay were a pair of Philomath teams. The A foursome of freshman Alyssa Weeber, Pindell, Kyah Weeber and sophomore Emma Mecham won in 2:2.75.
In the team standings, Cascade’s girls won by a close three-point margin over the Warriors (86 to 83) with Kennedy third (22).
For the boys, McLennan easily won the 500 freestyle in 6:18.47. Swimming against six other entrants, McLennan’s time was 25.1 seconds faster than the runner-up. He was the lone entry in the 100 backstroke and finished in 1:09.17.
Brandt’s two victories came in the 100 butterfly (58.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.47). Brandt had a decisive win in the breaststroke with a time that was nearly 16 seconds faster than the runner-up. Brandt swam alone in the 100 fly.
Senior Alex Dye and junior Mason Stevens had wins as well. In a race with only two PHS swimmers, Dye won the 200 individual medley in 2:35.42. Stevens took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:39.25, a margin of 6.63 seconds over the runner-up.
As was the case with the girls, the 200 medley relay for the boys was limited to a pair of Philomath teams. The foursome of Stevens, Brandt, McLennan and senior Emmitt Gaskey won in 1:53.42.
The Warrior boys won with 105 points to Cascade’s 73 and Kennedy’s 17.
The swim teams were scheduled to compete again Saturday in the annual District Sprint Meet at Albany. The next appearance for the Warriors will be at home this coming Wednesday with Marist Catholic, North Marion and Stayton scheduled to visit Clemens pool.
