The Philomath High School softball team scored 35 runs in four innings in a rout over Blanchet Catholic in Salem Wednesday afternoon.

The Warriors even their record at 1-1 with the 35-5 victory and they will now take the rest of the week off competitively before leaving early next week for the North Medford Spring Break Tournament. Philomath will face Elmira and Willamina on Monday and Amity and Salem Academy on Tuesday.

Senior Janae Traglia had a career game by going 4 for 4 with a home run, double, seven RBIs and five runs scored. Traglia’s home run occurred during her second plate appearance in the first inning and was a three-run shot that drove in senior Kaylie Kohler and freshman Rylee Martin.

Traglia, senior Kaylie Kohler, senior Hannah Bennett and freshman Libby Kramer each finished with four hits. Senior Laighla Hockema had two hits. Kramer had a pair of triples and Kohler, Bennett and Hockema hit doubles in addition to the one by Traglia.

In one of the more unique linescores, Martin went 0 for 0 with six runs and two RBIs. Martin walked four times and was hit by a pitch twice — none of those six plate appearance counts in the official statistics as an at-bat.

In all, Philomath had 22 hits and every player that got into the game for the Warriors reached base. Blanchet’s pitchers walked 15 batters and PHS reached five times on players hit by a pitch.

At pitcher for the Warriors, sophomore Haley King pitched two innings and allowed three hits, four runs and four walks with three strikeouts. Freshman Hailey Smith threw one inning and allowed two hits, one run and two walks with one strikeout.

It’s possible that the 35 runs scored is a school record but that could not be confirmed because results prior to 2014 are not immediately available without researching game-by-game results from those earlier seasons. It is the only time in the past 11 years that the Warriors scored 30-plus runs in a game. The previous high since 2014 was 23 runs scored in a 2017 win over Cascade.
