The Philomath High School softball team opened the season on Monday afternoon with a 15-5 win over Sisters. Although the Warriors won on the 10-run mercy rule, the game was actually close going into the sixth inning.
Philomath never trailed in the contest but Sisters fought back from a 7-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Warriors responded by scoring eight in the top of the sixth for a 10-run lead and then the Outlaws went down scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and the game was called.
Philomath (1-0) will make its home debut on Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Sweet Home.
The Warriors opened the season with four runs in the top of the first inning against the Outlaws. Kaili Saathoff and Presley Reichhuber both singled to start the game and Emily King drove in Saathoff on the team’s third straight single. Reichhuber then scored on a Melanie Baldwin groundout. King scored on an error and Kamden Combs, who had been hit by a pitch, came around to score on an Ahnika Tryon single to right.
Sisters scored a run in the bottom half without getting a hit but Philomath got it back in the top of the second to make the score 5-1. Reichhuber singled to center and scored on a King double to left.
Philomath went up 7-1 in the fourth. Saathoff was hit by a pitch to open the inning and scored on an outfield error on a Reichhuber fly ball. Reichhuber later scored on a Baldwin infield groundout.
The Outlaws countered with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Warriors erupted to take control of the game. Saathoff, Reichhuber, Baldwin, Combs and Kyla Berger all had hits in the inning. Saathoff and Reichhuber actually had two hits in the sixth. King reached on a walk and Mia Bennett was hit by a pitch. Baldwin, Combs, Berger, Saathoff and Reichhuber all collected RBIs. Reichhuber drove in the eighth run of the inning on a line drive to center that plated Saathoff to make it 15-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sisters got its first batter on base but then the Outlaws went down on a popout, groundout and popout.
Reichhuber went 4 for 5 and scored four runs, Saathoff was 3 for 4 with four runs, King went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Berger finished 2 for 4 and Baldwin drove in four runs.
In the circle, Combs allowed four hits, five walks and two earned runs while striking out 10.
