Walking off the Philomath High School softball field back on April 15 following the team’s home opener, players were embarrassed. Sweet Home had clobbered the Warriors, 16-1, in a game shortened to four innings on the mercy rule.
The two teams hooked up again on Monday in Sweet Home and Philomath issued a little payback by leaving town with a 6-1 victory.
The Warriors have won four straight Oregon West Conference games and now stand at 5-2 in the league, 5-3 overall.
Philomath pitcher Kamden Combs was in the zone in a seven-inning performance that included just two hits allowed and only one walk issued with no earned runs.
The Warriors scored twice in the top of the first and never trailed the Huskies. Kaili Saathoff reached base on an error to open the game and after stealing third, she scored on a Reagan larson single. Three batters later, Larson made it home on a Combs grounder to the shortstop.
Sweet Home (5-4) scored a run in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of infield errors.
The game remained 2-1 into the sixth inning. That’s when the Warriors pulled away with four more runs for a 6-1 advantage. Ahnika Tryon was hit by a pitch, Ashlynn Barron singled to right and Saathoff walked to load the bases. Larson came through with a two-run double and then Emily King followed with a two-run single.
King went 4 for 5 with two RBIs, Larson finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and both Presley Reichhuber and Barron had 2-for-3 games.
Philomath hits the field again Wednesday with a home game against Stayton. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. On Thursday, the team heads to Cascade.
