The Philomath High School volleyball team took first place in a tournament Saturday at Junction City, a performance that included a come-from-behind win in the championship match.
The Warriors played Madras in the semifinals and rolled to a 25-9, 25-10 win. In the finale, Philomath defeated the host school, 21-25, 25-19, 15-5.
“It was a long day of volleyball and the team definitely showed their perseverance through adversity and tough situations,” PHS coach Whitney Thomas said. “We were down a few different times today and they fought their way back to earn the win in the final.”
Thomas said senior Isabelle Muir, senior Shaylee May and freshman Alyssa Stanley each had a “tremendous day defensively.”
Junior Nora Stanley had 38 kills and 11 aces in the tournament. Senior Taylor Hudson finished with 27 kills and also had 12 stuff blocks. Junior Megan Ward had 18 kills and nine stuff blocks. Senior Avery Smith finished with 82 assists from the setter position.
“Avery pushed herself mentally to lead the offense in every situation,” Thomas said. “And Nora, Taylor and Megan were a solid offense at the net.”
Thomas said all players on the team were able to see court time and contribute to the first-place finish, adding, “It was a great day for improvement all around.”
Philomath improves to 8-3 on the season and will get back into Oregon West Conference play on Tuesday with a trip to Cascade. The Cougars have an overall record of 8-4 and both teams are sitting at 2-0 in the league.
