The tables are set for an early season Oregon West Conference girls soccer showdown on Tuesday with Philomath heading to Woodburn. The Warriors and Bulldogs are both off to 2-0 starts in league play with back-to-back shutouts.
Philomath overpowered Sweet Home on the road Thursday evening with a 6-0 victory. The Warriors (3-1) led 2-0 at halftime and took control of the game for good with a pair of Ella Weickum goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half.
“It just took a lot of persistence; they put a lot of defenders back,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said about Sweet Home. “We had to find ways to get open looks. We had tons of possessions and lots of shots.”
Junior Elizabeth Morales-Marquez scored the game’s first goal in the 21st minute with an assist to sophomore Bailey Bell. Just three minutes later, sophomore Kamilla Grimmer hit the net with another assist to Bell.
Weickum, a senior, scored both of her goals with assists from Grimmer in the 52nd and 61st minutes, respectively.
“Ella’s first goal was off a short corner we took; her second was a header off a free kick,” Phelps said. “She had a great game along with K (Bacho) and Kamilla in the middle … really controlled it well.”
Bacho, a senior, scored in the 67th minute with an assist credited to junior Izabella Nanoski. Freshman Sophia Bauer scored her first high school goal with a shot in the 75th minute with an assist to freshman Petra Hernandez.
Sweet Home dropped to 0-2 in the conference, 1-3 overall.
The Philomath-Woodburn game on Tuesday is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. The game is scheduled to be livestreamed on the NFHS Network.
