The Philomath City Council at its Sept. 13 meeting officially established the Public Art Committee and applications are now being accepted from those interested in volunteering. The deadline to apply has been set for Sept. 27.

The committee’s purpose is to solicit public art ideas and make recommendations to the City Council for art to be placed within Philomath’s downtown streetscape design.

City Manager Chris Workman said that specifically, the committee will work with artists to develop large, round, metal sidewalk inserts that reflect the area’s history, culture or significance.

The committee will also solicit ideas and materials for an informational kiosk and make a recommendation to the council. The committee may also solicit and consider pieces of public art for the concrete plinths located throughout the Streetscape design.
