The Philomath High’s tennis teams went up against Junction City Thursday with the girls pulling out a 5-3 win and the boys falling in a matchup that featured just two matches.
For the girls, who were on the road, the Warriors won three of the four singles matches with senior Adele Beckstead (6-0, 6-0), junior Lucy King (6-0, 6-4) and sophomore Lucy Thomas (6-0, 6-2) all posting wins in the top three positions.
In the doubles matches, junior Maggie King and sophomore Lizzy Workman teamed up for a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 slot. At No. 4 doubles, junior Lacey Bacho and sophomore Isabelle Norman beat their opponents by a 6-4, 6-4 margin.
Freshman Bethany Cannon and Bella Nuñez pushed their opponents at No. 3 doubles but came up short in three sets.
With limited athletes participating, the Warriors and Tigers played just two varsity matches — both doubles — on the PHS courts.
Juniors Nate Houck and Lane Schell had a marathon match at No. 1 doubles against Junction City juniors Aden McNamar and Staton Barnes that came down to the final games in the third set. McNamar and Barnes ended up with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win.
The girls will see action again Friday on the PHS courts with a matchup against Dallas. The boys’ schedule shows its next match as Wednesday at home vs. West Albany.
