Philomath High freshman Lilly Ellis scored four goals in the first 26 minutes and the Warriors overpowered winless Taft on Tuesday afternoon, 9-0, in an Oregon West Conference girls soccer match.
The game was stopped at halftime on the OSAA mercy rule.
“We controlled throughout — starting with a great cross and headed goal,” said PHS coach Mat Phelps, referring to the first goal by Ellis with the assist by senior Ella Bumstead. “We worked on connecting passes and finding quality chances. It was a great effort by several girls to get to loose balls and finish with control. Several girls also had the opportunity to play new positions.”
In addition to the header, which gave Philomath a 1-0 lead in the second minute, Ellis also found the net in the 10th, 13th and 26th minutes. Sophomore Autumn Wilson had an assist on Ellis’ third goal while the other two were unassisted. Ellis also had an assist on the team’s second goal, which came in the eighth minute on a shot by senior Angelica Morales-Marquez.
Junior Bethany Cannon scored the team’s fifth goal in the 17th minute with Wilson credited with the assist.
Junior Kya Bolton, the top returning scorer from last season, saw her first action after missing the first six games because of injury. Bolton scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute.
“Kya played a few minutes,” Phelps said. “It was great to see her back out there working into it.”
Wilson had the team’s eighth goal in the 36th minute and Bumstead scored the ninth goal in the 39th minute — both unassisted.
Taft (0-5 overall, 0-2 Oregon West) had no shots on goal in the contest compared with Philomath’s 22. The Warriors had a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Philomath (4-3, 2-0) is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Cascade.
