Philomath High’s boys dominated the singles matches and pulled out a three-set thriller at No. 2 doubles in a 5-3 tennis victory Tuesday at Stayton.

Senior Andrew Leonard (6-2, 6-0), senior Sawyer Ainsworth (6-3, 6-0), junior Jackson Rice (6-2, 6-2) and sophomore Johnny Pickett (6-0, 6-0) won the four singles matches in decisive fashion.

In the No. 2 doubles match, seniors Osvaldo Garcia-Bazan and Owen Thomas paired up and were able to overcome a sluggish start to post a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Stayton freshmen Caleb Larsen and Devin Hatfield.

Philomath was competitive at No. 3 doubles but junior Ethan Aynes and senior Nick Purcell came up short in another three-set match. Stayton sophomore Ayden Collman and freshman Ashton Becker got the win, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

The team’s record goes to 11-2 overall, 4-1 in league play.

The Warriors are scheduled to play their regular-season finale at home on Thursday, April 25, against Estacada.
