The Philomath High School boys soccer team remained unbeaten Thursday evening with an 8-1 victory at Sweet Home.
Philomath sophomore Sammy Hernandez and junior Jacob Hernandez each scored two goals and senior Caleb Babcock had a goal and three assists in the win, which puts the Warriors at 5-0 on the season, 1-0 in the Oregon West Conference.
The Warriors took control early with three goals within the first 16 minutes of the game with Babcock involved in each one. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño opened the scoring with a goal in the second minute off a throw-in by Babcock. In the 13th, Babcock scored with an assist by junior Esias Sapp. And in the 16th, Sammy Hernandez finished with an assist by Babcock.
After Sweet Home got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick, Philomath benefited from an own goal by the Huskies to take a 4-1 lead. A couple of minutes before halftime, Jacob Hernandez scored.
For most of the second half, neither team found the net until Philomath lit it up over the final 10 minutes. Jacob Hernandez scored with an assist by Nuño, senior Zach Grapoli finished with an assist by Sapp and then Sammy Hernandez had a goal on another throw-in by Babcock.
Sweet Home drops to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the conference.
The Warriors are scheduled to play at home Tuesday vs. Stayton.
