The Philomath High School boys basketball team upped its record to 5-0 on the season with a 53-21 rout on the road at Newport.
The Warriors got off to a bit of a slow start with a lead of only 8-5 through the first 8 minutes. But over the 16-minute stretch of the second and third quarters, Philomath scored 41 points to put the game away.
Philomath had a 21-2 run in the second quarter with sophomore Ty May scoring nine of his game-high 23 points. Another sophomore, Cole Beardsley, figured big into second quarter scoring with three field goals.
The onslaught continued into the third. Seniors Michael Lundy and Chase Beardsley buried 3-pointers and May threw in another eight points during the quarter. Philomath backed off in the fourth with the only scoring coming on a pair of May hoops.
In addition to May’s 23, Lundy also finished in double figures with 11. May’s points came on 11 field goals, one of those a 3-pointer. Philomath shot only four free throws in the game with Newport whistled for just seven fouls.
Junior Kaden Bruns scored 10 to lead Newport (1-4).
The Warriors are scheduled to play at home on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Cascade. Philomath beat Cascade on the road earlier this season, 55-49. The Cougars come in with a 4-2 record, the team’s other loss coming at Woodburn.
