The Philomath High School girls basketball team won its fifth straight game to open the season and its 29th straight against Class 4A opponents with a 70-34 victory over visiting Newport.

The Cubs were the last 4A team to defeat Philomath, which occurred on March 9, 2019, in a medal-round game at the state tournament.

The Warriors have won their five games this season by an average margin of 30.2 points.

Junior Sage Kramer was on the mark for 32 points on 13 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws. Newport could not stop Kramer in the first half as she scored 14 in the first quarter and 11 in the second quarter.

Two other PHS players scored in double digits as well with Hailie Couture’s 12 points and Abigail Brown’s 10 points.

Philomath (5-0) will play again on Wednesday with a road trip over to Cascade. The Cougars will come into the game with a 5-1 record — it’s only loss coming to the Warriors on May 22 by a count of 63-37.
